Projects - University Campus Central Utilities Plant

Galveston, Texas

Central Utilities Plant for University CampusFor this project BDMI acted as prime consultant to the owner, and engaged the services of the architectural, structural, civil and other design professionals.

The project consisted of the addition of a new 17,000 square foot central utilities plant facility to the University campus. The 9,000 ton central plant is designed to be expandable to 18,000 tons, and BDMI evaluated several sites and prepared studies of thermal storage and cogeneration before finalizing the project scope.

The facility houses one 4,500 ton, 0.550 KW/ton electric centrifugal open drive chiller, a two-cell masonry shell cooling tower and auxiliary equipment. Space is provided for a second 4,500 ton chiller that may be either electric motor driven or a cogeneration system using a gas turbine driven with a waste heat boiler. The project included a 3,000 linear foot underground thermal utility distribution system consisting of 36 inch, 30 inch and 16 inch chilled water piping, 12 inch steam piping and 4 inch pumped condensate piping.
