Projects - University of Texas Medical Branch John Sealy Hospital Renovations

BDMI has provided MEP consulting engineering services at John Sealy Hospital for The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston on over 50 adaptive re-use projects for over forty years.
The first major adaptive re-use effort at John Sealy Hospital BDMI involved a new 590,000 square foot addition directly connected to the existing hospital originally constructed in the early twentieth century and replaced the services offered by the older facility. The new addition contained 600 patient rooms, 21 operating rooms, radiology suites and all administrative and support functions for a major hospital.
Concurrently, the older facility underwent multi-phase renovations that included the replacement of the HVAC system and other MEP infrastructure components. Activities between the two facilities were coordinated to accomplish scheduled change-over to new systems while disruption to personnel and patients was minimized. The older facility remained operational throughout the project duration.
BDMI has continued providing services to John Sealy Hospital on major renovation projects into the twenty first century. A Radiology Suite Renovation Project consisted of the demolition of administrative and patient treatment areas and constructing a new modern radiology treatment area in its place. The renovation areas included space located on the second floor of five separate buildings (the UHC Building, old Children’s Hospital, The Clinical Sciences Building and John Sealy Annex), forming a contiguous space centered in the McCullough Building.
This project involved an almost complete demolition of the older MEP systems due to their inadequacy for the adaptive re-use. The project was constructed in four phases to minimize disruption to hospital personnel.
