Projects - Rice University Martel College
Houston, Texas
This project consisted of the addition of a new student residence facility (Martel College) and the renovation of two existing residence facilities (Jones and Brown Colleges), accomplished in five construction phases.
Martel College was the newest of nine residential dormitories on the Rice campus. At the time, the new 100,000 square foot facility consisted of four stories and provided housing for approximately 232 students. The Brown College Addition involved approximately 26,000 square feet of residential area, classrooms and a student lounge. The addition was 4 stories and connected to the existing Brown College facility, enlarging its existing capacity by 58 student beds.
The new 26,500 square foot Jones College Addition was four stories tall and connected to the existing Jones College on its north and south wings, forming the east end of what is known as the Jones Quadrangle. The upper levels provided housing for 44 students. The Martel, Brown and Jones Commons provide dining space for the students with a 25,000 square foot kitchen and dining hall.
